Agyemang poser for Whittingham

Guy Whittingham is weighing up a rest for Patrick Agyemang.

And the Pompey boss has warned his side they should not become over-reliant on using the powerful front man.

Whittingham feels Agyemang’s explosive early-season form has dipped in recent weeks.

He reckons sides are highlighting his threat as one that needs negating when they face the Blues.

And that is something his considering countering against Rochdale.

Whittingham said: ‘Pat has dropped off a bit of late.

‘Do we rely too much on him? Maybe we do.

‘Maybe we rely on big Pat getting hold of it and there’s a lot of expectation on him.

‘Teams will do their homework on him and see that.

‘They will say make sure they don’t go through Pat Agyemang all the time.

‘We considered that this week – making sure we don’t have to rely on him as much as we have been.

‘He’s a big guy but he’s experienced and looks after himself. He’s only just 33.

‘I remember being 33 at Sheffield Wednesday and having one of my best seasons. It depends on how you look after yourself.’

John Marquis would be an obvious choice to start after his goal against York, if Agyemang is rested.

Whittingham has been impressed with his attitude since arriving from Millwall.

He said: ‘I’m pleased with John. When you loan someone, especially from the Championship, they are going to expect to start.

‘He came in on the Thursday before Fleetwood and I wanted him to bed in a bit more and then last week I felt Pat and David Connolly would hit it off.

‘David has just come back and they needed to get that partnership going.

‘But John came on and added something to our front line, for sure.

‘He’s looked sharp and confident. I know if you score at the weekend you always feel sharper in training.’
