Pagham footballers put heart and soul into fundraiser
Pagham FC have put their football downtime to good use by running a collective 1000km in memory of their popular committee man Barry Price in aid of the British Heart Foundation.
All 22 first team players, plus the club physio Matt Cott and the management team of Kerry Hardwell, Ryan Pharo, Lou Haga Hammond and Richie Hellen all took part.
Hardwell said: “We hit our 1,000k target with five days to spare on day 25, then went on to hit a total of 1,268km.
“We hit the target of £500 within 24hours and went on to raise a total of £2,570 – that’s to date.
“We had a in house leaderboard using the Strava running app and will have prizes going out to the top achievers at our first home game back, whenever that may be.”
Barry was much-loved at Nyetimber Lane and was always willing to lend a hand or give his backing to the club in whatever capacity in which he could.
His funeral was held last week but with current restrictions on numbers of people in attendance, not everyone was able to attend and there was no wake under the current government guidelines.
Hardwell added: “As soon as we have our first home game back, it will be in honour of Barry and will be an occasion where we can all safely celebrate Barry’s life together as a club, and no doubt his family will be attendance.
“ I think I speak on behalf of everyone at the club when I say a big thank-you to all the lads who have been out running in all conditions and to everyone who donated money to the cause – it’s something I’m glad we did.
“It’s kept all the boys active and the team spirit high during these times of no sport and football.
“I’d like to also thank personally Ryan Pharo and Josh Miller, who have pretty much overseen this fundraiser throughout its duration.”
