Midhurst marvels stun Newhaven

What a surprise was in store as lowly Midhurst beat league leaders Newhaven 6-1 in a Sussex League division-two clash.

Following the previous week’s poor performance in a 5-2 defeat by Storrington, very few players or supporters could visualise collecting all the points - let alone winning the game by such a margin.

Early on, club captain Gary Norgate was on hand when a slick passing move gave him the opportunity to beat Newhaven keeper John Buss.

Five minutes later, Michael Asare netted the first of his three goals and Newhaven could not counter Midhurst’s enthusiastic approach.

Previous weeks had seen Midhurst poor in forward and defensive play but now the whole team were playing with spirit.

Newhaven, having lost only one game in their previous 15 starts, couldn’t believe their opponents’ superior approach.

Asare was in top form and netted on 35 and 55 minutes.

His speed and agility meant he was receiving plenty of attention from the Newhaven defenders and on one or two occasions robust play caused the referee to show cards. He then showed Ed Jallow a red card and Newhaven played the rest of the game with ten men.

Midhurst midfielder Lawrence Hyde added further goals in the 68th and 82nd minutes and Newhaven were well-beaten.

Both teams used their substitutes during the last 15 minutes - Sean Dummer, James Wills and Andy Newton replaced James Glue, Kevin White and Michael Asare for Midhurst.

In the last few minutes, Luke Robinson scored for Newhaven.

MIDHURST: Knight, Glue, White, Farr, May, Hyde, Hamilton, Collins, Norgate, Asare, Norgate, Dummer, Wills, Sheldrake, Newton.
