Midhurst exit cup at Eastbourne

A Division 2 Challenge Cup game away to Eastbourne United Afc was always going to be a tough task for the division’s bottom side Midhurst, with their hosts the league leaders and FA Vase quarter-finalists.

Many different players have made up the Midhurst team of late and this has not helped them carve out positive results.

The wet weather has curtailed fixture schedules recently and one handicap Midhurst have is a lack of floodlights, which would allow home matches in midweek.

The long journey to Eastbourne meant only a small band of supporters made the trip and they were pleased to note the effort shown by the team.

At half-time whistle it was 2-0 to Eastbourne, although Midhurst had gone close several times - and more shots at goal would bring about a badly-needed win. One more goal in the second half completed a 3-0 win for United.

But if the team can maintain their enthusiasm, the belief Midhurst can accrue enough points to avoid relegation will remain.

MIDHURST: Knight, Merritt-Smith, White, Broughton, Norgate, Pelling, Randall, Hyde, Sheldrick, Peck, Day. Subs: Dowdell, Castleton.

This week, Midhurst entertain Uckfield (2pm), while the reserves visit Broadbridge Heath.
