Taking on a side who were sixth gave Midhurst plenty to think about - but Bexhill showed why they were so high in the Sussex League division two table with a 2-0 win at Rotherfield.

The return of Lewis Hamilton from Pagham lifted the home team but captain Gary Norgate was suspended after recent bookings.

Midhurst had several new players on show and the opening 20 minutes saw the hosts in control but unable to score.

Bexhill worked out how to counter Midhurst’s passing game and Midhurst’s accuracy in front of goal let them down.

Five minutes before half-time Peter Cooper was well positioned to place the ball clear of Byron Kearns and put Bexhill in front.

This rocked Midhurst and when Ashley Jarvis netted soon after, they were facing a big task.

Luke Sheldrick came on in place of Jonny Denham and Dean Baldock replaced James Turner but Midhurst could find no way back into it.

Midhurst look forward to visiting Haywards Heath this Saturday. Their reserves lost 5-0 at Seaford in the cup. This weekend they host Sidlesham.

Vernon Wentworth Cup R2

Sidlesham made it three wins in a row to make progress in their inaugural Vernon Wentworth Cup run.

The Sids pushed forward looking for a early breakthrough but could not break down the Arundel defence.

Arundel were being restricted but against the run of play, they breached the Sids defence on 30 minutes - scoring with a great angled drive.

The second half saw the Sids continue to drive forward and John Phillips was denied a goal by a fine save by the Arundel keeper.

Their effort paid off on 57 minutes when the ball was played to Phillips, who beat the Arundel keeper.

The game opened up and Arundel were denied by Sids keeper Ashley Rochester, who pulled off two great saves.

The Sids replaced Dean Platt with Darren Cox and went looking for a winning goal.

On 80 minutes, Phillips had a shot blocked and the ball fell to Barry McCoy, who hit a unstoppable shot past the keeper.

Arundel pushed for a equaliser and again MoM Rochester denied them - and the Sids saw out the final minutes to reach the quarter-finals.

With the new management team settled in, the reserves winning 3-2 at second-placed Loxwood and the under-18s winning 2-1 at Pagham in their league cup, it has been a great weekend for the Sids and the future looks rosy.
