Defeat for Selsey - and there’s no lights at end of tunnel

Selsey suffered opening-day disappointment at Hassocks as the home side ran out 3-1 winners at The Beacon.

Despite a promising pre-season and a new-look formation, Ian Martin’s side couldn’t stop Laurence Robinson opening the scoring on 38 minutes.

Jamie Weston doubled Hassocks’ advantage six minutes after the interval but Dan Cox got on the scoresheet soon after to grab a goal back for the visitors.

The two-goal lead was restored however when Philip Gault scored Hassock’s third from the penalty spot in the 77th minute.

There was further disappointment for Selsey when their home opener on Tuesday night against Arundel was postponed because the league were not satisfied with the floodlights.

Although the lights have not been altered, it appears the league rules have.

Surprisingly, the game was only called off on the day – leading to questions over why the league did not speak up sooner.

Next up for Martin’s side is an FA Cup preliminary round tie against county second-division outfit Mile Oak at the High Street Ground on Saturday.
