It was SCFL Division Two Cup week and Bosham and Sidlesham both made it through to the next round.
Here’s how they did it.
Bosham 8 Ferring 0
SCFL Division Two Cup
Bosham began the defence of their division two cup with a very comfortable victory in the opening round against a Ferring side struggling for form and quality.
Marco Giambelardini grabbed yet another hat-trick as Bosham moved into the quarter-finals in fine style.
The Robins had all the play from the off and the majority of the first half was played in the visitors’ half, but the lack of early goals could have been a concern to the Bosham management.
They needn’t have worried as after 20 minutes the red bandwagon got their noses in front through Giambelardini. Alex Barnes expertly picked out his team-mate with a sublime pass and Giambelardini did the rest, leaving keeper Harry Yates somewhat embarrassed between the sticks.
Just after the half-hour the lead was doubled by Giambelardini, rounding off another swift move. Again Barnes was at the heart of the move, setting his team-mate up, and Giambelardini’s shot completely wrongfooted Yates.
Minutes later Barnes got on the scoresheet. Giambelardini returned the favour with a simple ball setting the speedster free to fire home.
Soon Midfield maestro Bradley Miles latched on to a loose ball to slide the ball into the back of the net resulting in Bosham going into the break with a very comfortable advantage.
Matt Docherty, James Wilson and James Colinese came on for the second half and only a minute had gone when Bosham moved further in front through Louis Bell.
Again Bosham ran the Ferring defence ragged and Bell was in the right place at the right time to bury his effort into the bottom corner to end it as a contest.
With Ferring heads drooping Bosham continued to attack at will and Bell was again in the perfect position to net his second.
Jake Lafferty added to the tally as his, albeit, fortuitous deflection from a Giambelardini shot was good enough to beat the despairing dive of Yates and add further insult to injury.
Giambelardini rounded off the scoring with his third and Bosham’s eighth to bring to an end a totally one-sided affair and send Bosham through to the quarter-finals and an intriguing home tie against Jarvis Brook.
Bosham: Magee, Probee, Gilbert, Bulbeck, Fewell, Bell, Barnes, Miles, Lafferty, Giambelardini, Dowden. Subs: Redman, Wilson, Colinese, Docherty.
Montpelier Villa 2 Sidlesham 3
Div Two Cup
Sidlesham made cup progress when they made the trip to Brighton to take on Montpellier Villa.
Sids handed debuts to new signings Dale Hayes and Tom Atkinson. They started well and Tom Bayley twice went close from outside the box.
With Hayes and Joe Leggatt controlling the high balls from the home side, Sidlesham attacked and it wasn’t long before they were in front as Tom Jefkins was tripped in the box and up stepped Bayley to fire home.
The second soon followed when a shot from Sidlesham wideman Callum Dowdell was handled in the box and up stepped Bayley to get his second.
Both sides were reduced to ten men as Joe Leggatt and a home striker were sent off for an incident late in the first half when many felt yellow cards would have been adequate.
Sidlesham began the second half with a great run and cross from Dowdell which was dispatched with ease by Jefkins.
Sids took their foot off the gas a little and the home side got one back, Trevor Wilson finishing well amid poor marking.
The visitors could have put the game out of reach with Dowdell, Bayley and John Phillips all going close.
Sidlesham were thankful to keeper Connor Kelly on the hour making two fantastic saves, pushing both efforts away when a goal seemed certain.
Villa snatched one more in stoppage time when impressive winger Liam Downes finished after Sidlesham gave the ball away too easily.
This Saturday sees Sids on their travels again in an Intermediate Cup tie at Nutley (1.30pm).
