Joe Fanning took the honours in a thrilling renewal of one of Goodwood’s late-season highlights.

He guided the Mark Johnston-trained Lyn Valley to a brave victory in the Peter Willett Conditions Stakes - the feature race of Tuesday’s seven-race card.

The 2-1 shot had a good battle with Rosso Corsa in the final furlong and there was only a neck between them at the line.

Johnston’s wife Deirdre said: “We weren’t quite sure whether he wanted six or seven furlongs but we plumped for seven and it has worked out nicely.

“It gets quite exciting now as he’s entered in next week’s Champagne Stakes at Doncaster as well as two of the valuable Tattersalls sales races at Newmarket on September 21 and October 5. The last one is worth half a million, so I would imagine we’ll be tempted by that.”

A handful of Betfred Cesarewitch entries were appearing in the Royal Sussex Regiment Stakes but all were put to the sword by 16-1 chance Aquilonius, ridden by Mickael Barzalona.

Uchenna took the one-mile EBF Racing UK Maiden Fillies’ Stakes for trainer David Simcock under Jamie Spencer.

The William Haggas-trained Martian (9/4) stayed on past the prominently-ridden pair Nickels And Dimes and Are You Mine to take the Goodwood Racehorse Owners Group Maiden Stakes by a length and a half.

A weight difference of 19lb proved key in the Badger Ales Nursery as Mick Channon’s Deeds Not Words (4-1) nailed 5-2 favourite Expert.

Slip Sliding Away caused a 20-1 shock in the Golf At Goodwood Stakes despite trainer Peter Hedger’s excellent course record.

Mister Fizz (6-1) in the Goodwood Aviation & Flying School Handicap was a first winner for new trainer Imogen Pickard, a long-serving assistant to Edward Bevan.

Goodwood’s next meeting is on Wednesday, September 25, before the season finale on Sunday, October 13.
