WEST WITTERING Cricket Club’s Carl Tupper has been recognised for his efforts with a Sussex award - and could now win a national gong.
He took his place among the group of winners when the Outstanding Services to Cricket Awards (OSCAs) were dished out at Sussex CCC’s Hove HQ.
The aim was to recognise special people who devote huge amounts of their time, on a voluntary basis, to delivering recreational cricket.
More than 120 volunteers from around Sussex were nominated - more than ever before - including coaches, groundsmen, umpires, scorers, administrators and many more who undertake vital roles in clubs, leagues and other cricketing bodies.
The event was hosted by Tim Shutt, head of cricket development, and former Sussex CCC batsman and current SCCC business relationship manager Tony Cottey. Gardner and Scardifield’s sponsorship enabled the ceremony to take place.
Shutt said: “In my opinion, this is the best night of the year. We are now moving into awards season where we’ll see some excellent playing achievements recognised, but of course these players are only given the chance to excel through the devotion and commitment of the vast army of volunteers that enable cricket to happen.”
Tupper is first-team captain at West Wittering, who have just won promotion to division five of the West Sussex Invitation League. He carries out many other duties at the club - including writing match reports which appear in the Observer.
He has now been placed on a shortlist to receive the national award. The prize, along with other categories, will be handed out at the National OSCAs ceremony at Lord’s on Monday, October 22.
