Cricket open day is a success at Salthill

Salthill CC held their second very popular open day at the Fishbourne Centre on a hot, sunny day.

The event was well attended and enjoyed by all with several visitors showing interest in playing for Salthill, who have a Hampshire League team and friendly sides.

After the match, versus Milland, and a barbecue, a 120-prize raffle was drawn, with many of the prizes very kindly donated by local firms.

The match itself was a thriller.

Milland chose to bat. Bowlers Macdonald and Heather threatened early on and Abbot pushed Milland forward with a solid 30.

Good spells from Russell, King, Woodford and Elsbury snr showed the bowling depth Salthill had as they reduced the opposition to 102 all out. Salthill struggled in reply, losing regular wickets including openers Almack (22) and Trimmer. Heather pplayed a sensible innings.

Another middle-order collapse saw Salthill fall to 80 for seven with Heather still there on 30. After drinks he fell, but Woodford, King and Elsbury snr got Salthill home by one wicket.

Sporting Wessex v Salthill

Salthill made the trip to Southampton to face Sporting Wessex.

Salthill lost the toss again and were forced to bat. On a wicket that was no stranger to variable bounce, Salthill struggled to only 121 all out with Alec Wallsgrove making 24 while the middle order collapsed.

Salthill did better with the ball, keeping it quite tight early on thanks to a good line and length from Court and Holder jnr, who claimed the first wicket.

Salthill worked hard but good batting from the Sporting Wessex top order was enough to push the game into the home team’s hands. Despite a couple of late wickets. Wessex held on for the win.
