Callum is latest off Porter squash production line
Callum Porter has become the Sussex under-nine squash champion.
The eight-year-old from Bognor Squash Club won the title at the Corals Brighton club – as well as the plate competition for first-round losers in the under-11 category.
His elder brother George is now a regular team player at the Bognor club and dad Steve is a stalwart of the club, having been men’s champion on several occasions.
Meanwhile, Bognor’s first team travelled to play Middleton II in their latest match and although the 4-1 loss looks decisive, it was quite a close contest with three rubbers going to best of five.
Glenn Peskett was Bognor No5 up against Ben Morris. After losing the first Peskett won a close second game and went 2-1 ahead, but Morris levelled in the closest fashion and went on to edge the decisive game, winning 9-2, 8-10, 2-9, 10-9, 9-6.
The fourth-string tie was all Bognor as Alastair Campbell outplayed Paul Elliot, albeit with a tight finish to win in three games, 9-5, 9-4, 9-8.
No3 for Bognor Will Burley almost pulled off a great comeback after going two down to Mark Phillips. Burley dominated the third and fourth games to set up a decider and this fifth game was a battle to the last with Phillips just squeezing home - score 9-4, 9-0, 3-9, 1-9, 10-8.
Steve Porter was Bognor’s second string and he started well, going 2-0 up against Patrick Colvin, but he was unable to capitalise as the home player recovered well to level the rubber and take the fifth to win 5-9, 7-9, 9-0, 9-2, 9-6.
The top-string match saw Bognor captain Greg Jansz up against Rob Willway. At 1-1 it was anyone’s contest but Willway took the crucial third game 10-9 and ran away with the fourth, the score 9-3, 6-9, 10-9, 9-1.
This gave Middleton their second win of the season with 17 points and top spot in division one west.
Despite a second loss Bognor’s ten points was a really good performance and they’ll be looking to build on that in the next match at Hawthorn Road on October 21 when they entertain Chichester first. Details on 01243 865462 or the club website.
n Premier Squash League action returns to Chichester in less than a fortnight.
Chi are in Group B of this season’s league along with Coolhurst, Bexley, St George’s Hill and Surrey. They open their campaign at the CR&FC at home to St George’s on Tuesday, October 18.
