Bognor archers welcome all-comers to league match

The league is a friendly competition between archery clubs in the county and consists of shooting nine dozen arrows at three distances during a day’s competition.

The next round will see Bognor host Chichester Bowman this Sunday (Aug 7) at their archery ground behind the Arun Leisure Centre, Felpham (PO22 8ED) from 11am to around 5pm. All are welcome to watch.

The archers will be shooting with different bows: ‘long bows’ with no science/technology in the bow construction but fashioned from a single piece of wood by a craftsman; ‘bare bow’ which has minimal science/technology in the construction, typically limited to the composite materials used in the construction of the limbs, ‘recurve bow’ which has medium science/technology in the construction, typically using sights, balance weights and ‘clickers’ to help with draw length; and ‘compound bow’ which has the most technology, using pulleys to increase the power which can be used to propel the arrows.

The four best-scoring archers from each team are used to calculate the ‘team score’, a system of handicaps being used to equalise the differing bows.

The long bow and junior archers have a slightly different system for competing which involves postal scores from all county clubs competing.

The arrows are shot at 80, 60 and 50 yards but to enable newer archers to join in the competition, targets are laid out at shorter distances – the club are family friendly and archers of every ability are encouraged to join and take part.
