LETTER: Roundabouts are a disgrace

I AM one of the many who enjoy the floral displays in the centre of Chichester.

Forgive me if I’m mistaken, but I have a suspicion it is only the owners of the smaller shops who participate in the scheme – and individual shops are, sadly, disappearing almost weekly.

I’m sure the powers that be of chain stores have no interest whatever in enhancing the beauty of town centres – they just want to make as much money as possible.

I am, however, quite appalled by the state of the roundabouts and verges surrounding our city and feel that our city council is very short-sighted in not providing the funds to beautify these as an encouragement for visitors to venture further into the city.

The Westgate roundabout in particular is an absolute disgrace – the weeds are as high as the barely-visible rose bushes. I have recently returned from northern Spain (a country in dire financial straits) where the central reservations and roundabouts are a delight. If they can do it, why can’t we?
