DUNCAN Barkes is quite right. I think we should have left our party political system where it belongs – in the last century. It is well past its sell-by date. It’s such a shame that Britain is not involved in shaping a new type of democracy for the world , and it’s being left to small countries like Switzerland.
You’re on the right track, not just locally but it should also be nationally. We don’t really need MPs in my opinion: what we do need are experts, and by experts I mean for example very poor but articulate people to talk about poverty, rather than a millionaire MP, or expert economists rather than ordinary MPs to run the economy.
One small criticism: all of the four local cases you would fight for would probably involve spending real money – and there’s the challenge. What would you cut back on? Let’s try banning party politics from local councils and give it a go.
