Users say sad goodbye to popular gym

FITNESS fans bid a tearful farewell as a Bognor Regis gym closed.

The town’s Fitness First shut last Tuesday to make way for a new store.

The former gym at the Bognor Regis Retail Park will become a branch of Home Bargains.

One of those who tried to save the gym, Brenda McGovern, said: “Everybody was really sad on the last day. There were a lot of tears.

“It was really terrible. Most people have gone to other gyms. We will try to keep in touch with each other but it will never be the same. I feel very sorry for the instructors and the rest of the staff.”

The builder’s owner, Zurich Assurance, has sought planning permission to change its appearance to suit its future use.

The company plans to put in new automatic doors and new glazing at the Shripney Road site with a floor space of some 10,000sq ft.

A statement by its planning agent, Montagu Evans, says: “The application proposes external alterations to the building shell, which are designed to improve the appearance and function of this unit.

“The unit was recently granted planning permission a change of use to retail and the proposed alterations are required by the incoming retail tenant.”
