A MURDERER’S lies failed to mask his ‘evil act’ after he was found guilty unanimously by a jury today (January 30).

Phillip Brown, in his mid 40s, from Selsey, has been convicted of smothering Debbie Levey, 44, at her home in East Ashling a year ago.

Detective superintendent Ian Pollard, of Surrey and Sussex major crime team, said: “This was a complex and painstaking investigation.

“We worked very closely with forensic scientists and the pathologist, as well as with the Crown Prosecution Service and our counsel, Mark Dennis QC, to show that Brown’s claim never to have been in Debbie’s home on the day of her death was a lie.

“He evidently thought he could mask his evil act of smothering Debbie with a string of distractions, false clues and stories.

“But we were eventually able to show, to the satisfaction of the jury, that he was indeed the killer, and justice has now been done for Debbie, and her family.

“We pay tribute to her family, all of whom have borne the ordeal of the past 12 months with great dignity and fortitude. In particular the court evidence of Debbie’s 17-year old daughter was clearly compelling.”

The Selsey driver will now be sentenced on Monday (February 3) at Lewes Crown Court.
