EMERGENCY services were called after a car collided with a parked camper van on a busy North Bersted road.

Fire crews, police and paramedics were all called to the incident in Chichester Road on yesterday (Tuesday February 4) around 7pm.

A blue Nissan Micra was being driven west along the A259 when it collided with a parked white Fiat Ducato camper van, pushing it into a garden wall.

It is understood the 74-year-old man driving the Nissan had suffered a diabetic episode while at the wheel.

He was taken by ambulance to St Richard’s Hospital, Chichester after he had been assessed at the scene.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said he had no other injuries and was reported to have recovered.

Firefighters were at the scene for 35 minutes and alongside paramedics helped the man from the vehicle.

Drivers who saw the incident have described the motorhome as being diagonally across the road close to the mini roundabout at the Royal Oak pub.

Police have said the road was closed in both directions for some 40 minutes while the emergency services were at the scene.

Eyewitness James Wright, of Westloats Lane said he saw police cars heading towards the crash as he headed home from Chichester.

He said the road was completely blocked and the caravan had come to rest on the left-hand side of the road at an angle.

Anyone who saw what happened should contact Sussex Police on 101.
