THE NUMBER of 18-24 year olds out of work in the Bognor Regis area has fallen by 42 per cent.
Figures released by the department for work and pensions last week show the fall in young job seekers in the Arun district compared to this time a year ago.
Steve Wood, of Jobcentre Plus, said: “This is really positive and we hope it will continue.”
The figures also show a 69 per cent drop for 18-24 year olds when compared to 2010.
Overall, unemployment across Arun is down 30 per cent with some 1,181 claimants – compared to figures from 2010 it is a 59 per cent fall.
Mr Wood added Jobcentre Plus is continuing to build links with local employers.
He said: “We work very closely with employers. There are recruitment days at Butlin’s on a regular basis and they are starting to recruit for their seasonal employees. We have also been working with Premier Inn as they are expanding their Bognor hotel.”
Linked into the hospitality industry a sector-based work academy has also being running which has been helping people develop skills and confidence – with a guaranteed interview at the end. The figures show nationally there are 486,000 fewer unemployed people than a year ago with the number of long-term unemployed people dropping by 210,000 – the largest fall in 16 years.
