Medmerry Beach in Selsey was cordoned off by the Selsey Coastguard Rescue Team after ordnance was found.
The Selsey Coastguard was notified of the discovery at the beach around 5pm yesterday (October 23).
The team cordoned off the beach as a precaution before sending a picture of the piece of ordnance to the bomb disposal team, who deemed it safe.
The beach was then reopened by 6.30pm.
The Selsey Coastguard also called the bomb disposal unit to carry out a controlled explosion on Medmerry Beach at 3pm on October 20.
The beach was closed throughout the afternoon and the explosion was carried out at 6pm.
Just after 6.30pm yesterday evening, the team then received a call out from a member of the public who had concerns about a kayak which had failed to return to shore.
They were joined by the Selsey Lifeboat crew and sent up a flare to locate the kayak.
The Selsey Coastguard wrote on their Facebook page: “The team sent up a flare to light up the area out at sea where we could just make out a kayak about half a mile out at sea off Park Copse, we requested the launch of Selsey Lifeboat to investigate further.
“The Inshore Lifeboat made its way to the kayak who was out fishing and was in no trouble and wearing a buoyancy aid and carrying a VHF Radio and was happy to continue fishing.
“False alarm this time but all with good intent - and the correct thing to do - better safe than sorry.”
The team stood down to return to the station at 7.30pm.
In an emergency or if you are concerned about something or someone out at sea or along the coast dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
