DELIGHTED Poppy Appeal organisers have thanked the public for a record year.
The amount collected around Bognor Regis for the annual fundraising for the Royal British Legion reached £22,165.37 last year.
Organiser Sarah Herbert described the sum as staggering. She said: “The dedication from the volunteers to stand out in all weather conditions was humbling.
“As usual, the Army Cadet Force raised a staggering amount over £2,000, as they do every year.”
At the opposite end of the age range, the Legion’s Bognor branch chairman Clive Childs raised the most individually at £2,000-plus.
“At 83 years old and a veteran, he is an inspiration to us all that, even when his service to this great country was over, he still serves for the countless service personnel who need our help today,” said Mrs Herbert.
She also thanked John Izzard, from Middleton, whose team collected more than £4,000. One street collection, granted by Arun District Council, raised £165.15 in just a few hours in another sign of the community’s backing.
“A big thank you to the residents of Bognor for their continued support,” said Mrs Herbert.
“We couldn’t do this without their generosity. We look forward to their support this year.”
The 2014 appeal co-incided with a large amount of publicity about the centenary of the start of the first world war and the commemorations around the event.
