Rain fails to dampen the spirits as shop workers keep beach clean

SHOP workers braved bad weather to keep Bognor Regis beach clean.

The employees from Marks and Spencer, Chichester, shrugged off heavy rain to spend at least an hour litter picking along the foreshore.

Some 15 to 20 staff members were joined by ten employees from the company’s head office in London and customers for the tidy up.

It was carried out with the backing of the Marine Conservation Society.

Store manager Brian Futcher said: “Four out of ten of the items we find are left on the beach. The rest are washed in from the sea. That’s why it’s important to remind people to leave the beach clean.”

The clean-up was part of the M&S environmental policy known as Plan A, said Mr Futcher, which helped to protect fish stocks with cleaner seas.
