Public warned after highly explosive ordnance detonated on Medmerry Beach

A warning has been issued to beach-goers after a highly explosive ordnance was detonated on Medmerry Beach on Wednesday (February 6).

Members of the public have been advised on what to do if they come across similar objects on the beach.

Selsey Coastguard Rescue Team was called out at 6.25pm on Tuesday and found the ordnance. Due to lack of day light and the incoming tide they were stood down to return at 10.27am the following day.

A spokesman said: "Team retasked to ordnance at Medmerry Beach. On arrival the ordnance was located and a further search of the beach was carried out. More ordnance was found and a cordon was put in place and the beach was closed to the public.

"Navy E.O.D (Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team) arrived on scene and carried out a controlled explosion around 12.20pm. The ordnance was highly explosive, if you come across any ordnance on the beach or something you are unaware of please do not touch it and dial 999 straight away and ask for the Coastguard.

"Ordnance comes in all shapes and sizes and ordnance found on this beach have been found to be highly explosive like this piece so please do not touch it and call the Coastguard."
