For the first time in its 117-year history, The Arcade will be joining the town's annual Christmas light switch on.

The Victorian shopping centre will be lit at 5.30pm on Saturday November 24. The organisers have said it will feature 'beautiful rows of white lights and garlands, which will blend perfectly with the rest of the town's Christmas decorations'.

Nick Yates from The Arcade said: "Many shoppers tell us that we are an integral part of the town so we decided to participate in the annual light switch on, and build a new event into the centre's history."

The following week, on Saturday December 1, The Arcade will be kick-starting the magical month by hosting a Dickensian day from 10am. The event will feature traditionally dressed costume characters, as special visit from Father Christmas and free hot roasted chestnuts and candy canes — all sprinkled with a dusting of snow.

Nick added: "As the first weekend in December is known for people starting their Christmas shopping, we thought we would host a special event to help people to get in the festive spirit. With something on the day for everyone it will be an event not to miss and a day to remember."
