At a meeting of the events, promotions and leisure committee on Tuesday, councillors discussed whether this could incorporate the seafront beacon or be somewhere separate.

They decided to look further at designs to improve the beacon and to make use of it for future activities, such as a civic ceremony, but not as a selfie place.

They agreed to discuss where the selfie opportunity should be at a future meeting.

Jim Brooks (Ind, Marine) showed councillors some designs for lettering and a crest for the beacon.

“It is always nice to see Bognor from that spot,” he said.

“People do take photos there on a lovely day.

“This is something we should consider - to put something up that would make us proud of our sefront.”

Steve Goodheart (Ind, Hotham) suggested a large scale selfie location on the seafront mounds.

Matt Stanley (LDem, Marine) said the beacon was high up and he didn’t see how that would work for selfies.

“I’d like to see something a littel bit bolder,” he said.

Agreeing with Mr Stanley, John Erskine (LDem, Pevensey) said: “It just doesn’t work as a backdrop.” He said the photo angle wouldn’t be flattering.

He was very much in favour of Mr Goodheart’s idea, however, giving the example of the sign at Edinburgh airport.

“At Edinburgh airport almost everyone takes a selfie as they go past it,” he said.
