Meghan Markle interview with Oprah: Duchess of Sussex ‘didn’t want to be alive anymore’
The Duchess of Sussex said her mental health got so bad after joining the Royal Family that she ‘didn’t want to be alive anymore’.
Meghan Markle’s interview with Oprah Winfrey aired in the US in the early hours of this morning (Monday, March 8).
Most of the interview saw Meghan speaking with Oprah, before Prince Harry joined later.
The couple spoke about their relationships with other royals, racism and the impacts on their mental health.
Meghan spoke about the impact on her mental health and said she ‘didn’t want to be alive anymore’.
She said she felt lonely after joining the Royal Family and felt a loss of freedom after having to turn over her passport, driver’s licence, and keys.
She revealed she went to the institution and said she needed to go somewhere to get help but was told she could not as ‘it wouldn’t be good for the institution’.
She said she went to senior people within the Royal Family and to the Palce’s HR department but ‘nothing was ever done’.
Meghan also said there were ‘concerns and conversations’ about how dark Archie’s skin might be when he was born.
She said these conversations were with her husband Prince Harry – the Duke of Sussex – who then relayed them to her.
Prince Harry refused to say which royal said it, adding: “That conversation, I am never going to share. At the time it was awkward, I was a bit shocked.
Meghan also spoke about a story that circulated in newspapers a few years ago which claimed Kate Middleton – the Duchess of Cambridge – had been left in tears by Meghan in the run-up to the wedding over flower girl dresses.
Meghan told Oprah the reverse was true and that Kate had made her cry. Meghan claimed Kate later apologised and brought flowers and a note to make amends. She called Kate ‘a good person’ who she hoped would also want the false stories to be corrected.
After stepping back as senior royals, Harry claimed Charles stopped taking his calls and that he felt ‘let down’ by his father, the Prince of Wales.
When asked about his brother Prince William, Harry said he loved him to bits.
The couple also claimed their relationship with the Queen was ‘really good’. Harry said he has spoken to her more in the last year than he has for many years and called her his ‘colonel-in-chief’.
Meghan also claimed she had not done any research on the Royal Family or on Prince Harry while they were dating. She said she had to practice curtsying before meeting the Queen for lunch.
The couple also confirmed they were expecting a baby girl in the summer.
Asked if Meghan had got her happy ending, Meghan said: “Greater than any fairytale that you’ve ever read.”
