Covid curry hero is ‘honoured’ to offer free curries to NHS workers this month
Lal Hussain, owner of Anokha Indian Restaurant in West Meads, Bognor Regis says he feels ‘honoured’ to offer free food to blue light workers like NHS and Care Staff.
“Why not?” He said. “Sure, we might not make as much profit for this month, but the NHS have been supporting us all year.
“They’ve all worked really hard over the course of the pandemic, so they deserve a reward from everybody and, if we can give something back, then I’m honoured to be able to do that.”
The free meal offer is valid every Monday of the month, giving blue light staff a choice between a korma or a bhuna served with chicken, lamb or vegetables. Both come with a portion of rice and a free soft drink.
Mr Hussain said that, even though the offer has only just started, demand has been nearly overwhelming. Last week, on the first night the service ran, they provided 179 free curries.
That’s a lot of free food, but Mr Hussain says it’s about giving back to the community, about saying a personal thank you to the NHS staff who have manned vaccine centres up and down the county.
In a Facebook post announcing the deal, staff said; “Whilst we may have been in lockdown for a few months, these workers have gone above and beyond the norm for over a year now.”
This isn’t the first time Mr Hussain has supported front line workers. Last year, at the start of the pandemic, his restaurant was commended for its work providing food deliveries and discounts to NHS workers and vulnerable people alike. It received a plague from Curry Life Magazine, naming Mr Hussain a ‘covid curry hero’ and congratulating him on his work.

The free food offer will end at the end of the month.
