Police in the Arun district have launched Operation Tinsel to target shoplifters and other criminals taking advantage of the festive season.
Officers and PCSOs from the neighbourhood policing team will be conducting high-visibility patrols throughout the festive period to identify and target offenders.
They will work closely with shops and partners in the town centre and retail parks where there will be an increased uniformed presence.
The operation aims to provide reassurance to both the public and retailers, working to reduce incidents of theft and to reduce the fear of crime.
Sergeant Chris Thomas said: “If anyone is thinking about visiting our local towns to commit crime then think again.
“We’re sending out a strong message to thieves that shoplifting and other crimes, such as bag and purse thefts, will not be tolerated. Offenders can expect to be caught and dealt with robustly.
“Don’t hesitate to pick up the phone and talk to us if you notice anyone acting suspiciously in your are.
“You can help us to prevent these offences by calling our non emergency number 101 or dialling 999 if a crime is in progress.”
