The Local Government Boundary Commission is inviting feedback on plans to produce a new pattern of divisions across the county.

The announcement follows debate at County Hall which considered removing a seat in Adur and Horsham.

Chair of the commission Max Caller said: “The starting point of an electoral review is for the commission to take a view on the number of councillors that should represent the authority in future. On the evidence presented to the commission, we are minded to recommend that West Sussex should have 70 councillors.

“We are now asking local people and organisations to help us draw up new divisions for West Sussex. As we develop the recommendations, we will take into account local community identities as well as ensuring electoral equality for voters.

“Your views will make a difference.”

Submissions will be posted on the commission’s website, with residents given a further chance to have their say when its draft recommendations are published in November.

A West Sussex County Council spokesman said: “On checking detailed electorates split across the seven borough and district areas in the county, the council recommended that two seats should be removed – one in Adur and one in Horsham, to improve electoral equality.

“The county council will be working on a draft scheme of divisions and has invited district and parish councils and political associations to have a say on its work.”

Draft proposals will be debated in public at a council meeting on July 2.

Residents have until August 31 to submit their views.
