Lack of backing for restaurant on seafront

A BID to look at swapping diners for skateboarders on Bognor Regis seafront has been defeated.

Cllr Roger Nash said Arun District Council should allow a high-quality restaurant on the skateboard park on the former Esplanade Theatre site opposite the Royal Norfolk Hotel.

That was a better site than Hotham Park, he suggested at Tuesday’s meeting of the council’s Bognor Regis regeneration sub-committee.

“I don’t believe the park is the place for a destination restaurant. That place is on the skateboard park which could be moved elsewhere.

“We could have a two-storey building. That would give us regular catering on the ground floor and something a bit better on the upper floor.

“What we need in Hotham Park is a good-quality cafe,” said Cllr Nash (L, Pevensey).

That would be better than spending what he believed would be £200,000-£1m on a top-notch catering outlet in Hotham Park, but his idea failed to gain any backing.

Arun leader Cllr Gillian Brown (C, Aldwick East) said: “We can’t take on the Esplanade Theatre site at the same time as Hotham Park. Let’s get the park sorted out as soon as possible.”
