YOUNG engineering enthusiasts put their ingenuity and powers of endurance to the test at the Greenpower car national finals.

More than 100 teams and 1,000 students raced to the finish line at Goodwood Motor Circuit on Sunday for the charity’s flagship event. The day saw three different challenges with teams taking part from all around the country – not forgetting the USA and Poland.

The main race was a four-hour endurance race using the power of three sets of car batteries and five drivers. And teams from schools and colleges in the Observer area threw themselves into the competition.

Dorset House School in Bury was placed 64th, Slindon College finished 27th and 59th with two cars and Seaford College finished in style in 24th place.

The winners came from Chipping Sodbury School in Gloucestershire.

“Greenpower is a fantastically great initiative,” said Lord March, patron of the Greenpower Education Trust. “We are very pleased to be a part of it.”

Officers from Sussex Police also joined in the race day, using the event to promote safer roads.

The other races, both
won by Cullimore Racing, included a corporate challenge and a race for enthusiasts aged 16-25.
