FELPHAM Sailing Club has been given a £5,000 grant by West Sussex County Council to purchase a new training boat for next year’s sailing season.

The initiative came from the club’s Women on Water (WOW) group, who found they needed a new dinghy to support the growing number of women who wanted to start sailing.

Felpham Sailing Club has been encouraging women to take up sailing for several years with Thursday sessions all through the summer.

Catherine Hemsley from the club said: “The success of WOW is down to the fact that the sessions are very relaxed. They are social, run by women and include a shared meal prepared by one of the club members after sailing.”

WOW sessions take place throughout the summer months every Thursday from 6pm and are open to women of any level of experience. Around 40 women regularly took part in 2015 and numbers are expected to increase in 2016.

West Sussex County Councillor for Felpham, Graham Jones, supported the grant application at JWAAC (Joint Western Arun Area Committee}.

Cllr Jones said “The sailing club in Felpham is a unique facility open to the whole community young and old, men and women.

“It has taken this initiative to encourage women of all ages to take up this exciting sport and learn new skills.

“This new boat will enable beginners and older women to get out on the water, safely and with the right level of support.”
