A COMMUNITY is mourning the loss of a ‘well-loved’ leader, father, grandfather and businessman this week.
Henry Adams passed away on Friday at the age of 77 as he was leaving the Ageas Bowl cricket ground, after watching his beloved Hampshire beat Essex.
Mr Adams was Hampshire-born, but lived in Westerton, where he was chairman of Westhampnett Parish Council for around 25 years.
“He’s left such a hole in everybody’s lives,” said his fellow parish councillor and friend Jean Hardstaff.
“He was what everybody believes a typical Englishman should be.
“He was a great guy. He supported people and so much believed in supporting local people and local business.”
He chaired the council’s last meeting on July 22 where fellow councillor Bill Harding described him as being in the ‘rudest of health’.
In 1990, Mr Adams set up Henry Adams, a small agricultural and management office which grew into the chartered surveyors and estate agents.
His friend and business partner Richard Williscroft joined in 1991.
He described Mr Adams as a man of ‘immense integrity’.
“Ever the optimist, Henry never changed. He was always cheerful, upbeat and positive.”
He said the legacy would continue with Mr Adams’ son David as managing partner.
Former West Sussex county councillor Mike Hall knew Mr Adams for around 20 years. “He always put the community first and was well loved and respected,” he said.
“He will be sorely missed.”
Summing up Mr Adams in three words, Mr Hall said he was ‘a true gentleman’.
Mr Adams was one of the founding members of the Chichester Priory Rotary Club and was a former president.
He set it up along with Christopher Doman. The pair went to school together.
“He was always very active in everything he did,” said Mr Doman.
“He was very generous and had a lovely house in Westerton.
“He was a Chichester man and a member of the congregation of St Peter’s Church in Westhampnett.”
He described his friend as ‘larger than life’.
“He was a passionate gardener and had a superb garden at home.”
Mr Adams is survived by his wife Pat, his two children David and Fiona, and his grandchildren.
