WORKS to get rid of smells coming from Lidsey landfill are continuing.
The improvements have included minimising the operational area, capping the remaining active landfill cell with clay, and the flaring of the landfill gas. A further gas collection system is being installed in the active landfill cells which should be completed within the next week, but in the short term this activity may cause an odour.
Derek Whittington, who chairs the Lidsey landfill liaison committee, said: “The number of complaints received by Lidsey Landfill Ltd has reduced significantly as a result of the improvement works except for earlier this week when the drilling work was being undertaken. On investigation a number of the complaints have been unsubstantiated and there maybe other odour sources attributable to the complaints.”
Mr Whittington, who is also the county councillor for Fontwell, said the landfill took complaints extremely seriously and wished to offer its assurances it will continue to make every effort to ensure the site is fully compliant with all regulatory controls.
