Town mayor Cllr Jim Brooks gave Bognor Regis students tips about public speaking.
Cllr Brooks spent more than two hours in the town hall council chamber with the nine pupils from The Regis School.
The session was part of a year-long project for the Year 7 pupils led by five final year trainee teachers from the University of Chichester.
One of them, Melissa Jeffery, said: “We want to make the pupils even more talented in speaking and listening.
“They will make a video of what they done to show to the rest of the school’s Year 7 to pass on the information.”
Amelia Simpson, 11, was among those who met Cllr Brooks. “He told us you have to make sure people can see you, hear you and understand you.
“He said he got a bit nervous before he talked to people but he had got more comfortable with it the more he did,” she said.
