TODAY is the day a diamond couple celebrate their 60th anniversary.
Betty and Mac Smith married on August 1, 1953, both aged 22.
They met when they were 16 years old and went to the cinema with some friends.
Saturday saw relatives from all over the country come to the Lidsey Caravan Park, where the couple live for most of the year, to join the celebrations.
“It was absolutely fabulous,” said Betty.
“We even got a card from the Queen – that was a surprise.
“It arrived on Saturday morning. I couldn’t understand why my son-in-law was walking up and down the road – he was waiting for the postman.”
The couple have a son and a daughter.
They also have five granddaughters, three great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter.
“Everybody enjoyed themselves,” said Betty.
“They all said what a nice time they had.
“My family worked really hard and we’re so proud of them.”
One of the couple’s granddaughters, Samantha Gunn, said her grandparents were ‘fantastic’ together.
“They just one of those sweetheart romances,” she said.
