Shoplifter admits attacking and racially abusing shop staff


A shoplifter who attacked and racially abused staff at a shop in Bognor has appeared in court.

Police said Damon Hardman, of Chalcroft Lane, Bognor Regis, was arrested on Tuesday March 13 for stealing aftershave at Boots in London Road.

The 44-year-old landscape gardener became both physically and verbally aggressive when he was approached by staff.

Officers said he was arrested for using threatening, abusive, insulting words or behaviour with intent to cause fear or provoke unlawful violence, theft from shop, assault by beating and racially or religiously aggravated intentional harassment, alarm or distress.

Hardman pleaded guilty to all of the offences and on Thursday (March 15) at Crawley Magistrates’ Court he was given a 10 day community order and an £85 victim surcharge fine.
