POLICE have confirmed they are still negotiating with a man who burst into a shop armed with a knife.
Just after midday today armed police swooped on the Virgin Media shop, at the top end of busy Commercial Road shopping centre, and cordoned off a large stretch.
Officers with guns, riot shields, and police dogs can still be seen at the front and back of the shops – and at least two police officers are on the roof.
There were reports that injured people had been seen leaving the shop but police say this is incorrect.
They have also confirmed there is just one suspect inside the building – not three as had been rumoured – and they working to calm him down.
In the statement Hampshire Constabulary said: ‘We can confirm police received a call shortly after 12pm today to a report of one man making threats with a knife within a business address on Commercial Road, Portsmouth.
‘The surrounding area was evacuated and sealed off to the public while specialist police negotiators were called to speak with the man as part of our response to resolve the situation safely and peacefully.
‘Those negotiations are continuing at this time.
‘There are no reports of injuries, and no information to suggest a wider threat to the public in the city.’
