Dog helped police catch suspect in Bognor Regis

A police officer had some extra help when he was chasing a suspect across a Bognor Regis field - thanks to Layla the Doberman.

PC Ross Wickings and his colleague stopped a car which was being driven erratically in Harold Close.

All four people in the vehicle was searched and a quantity of cash and cannabis was found on Sunday (May 20).

One of the suspects then ran off and PC Wickings pursued him across a field.

Two-year-old Layla the Doberman then came out of a nearby bus and ran straight for the suspect, who promptly stopped and was then arrested.

PC Wickings said: “I thanked the man who was with Layla in the field as her timing was fantastic and she helped me to detain the suspect.”

Samuel Madgwick, 18, of Arun Road, has been charged with possession of cannabis and is due to appear at Chichester Magistrates Court on June 13.

A 19-year-old man from Bognor was given a warning for cannabis possession, and a 19-year-old Petworth man was also given a warning for cannabis possession and a caution for possession of an offensive weapon.

An 18-year-old man from Bognor was given a caution for possession of cannabis.
