Cowdray Park seniors held their inaugural charity day in aid of captain Brian Brockhurst’s nominated charity, Prostate Cancer UK.
Brian and his wife Suzie spent many hours working to make sure the day was a great success and they arranged a large number of prizes for the golf and the raffle.
Donations of prizes came from members, non-members and small and large companies. Sainsburys of Chichester gave biscuits for distribution to the players on the course, while Cowdray Park GC gave a day for four at Effiingham Golf Club.
The efforts of the Brockhursts paid off on the day, with an entry of 84 players, who made a donation instead of paying an entry fee and also bought tickets for the raffle.
Excellent support for the occasion came from the staff at the club, particularly director of golf Tim Allen and Archie Challen.
At the presentation of prizes, Brian thanked all who had helped, wives and relatives of players, and, of course, the seniors who took part in the Stableford.
In addition to the amount raised, two visiting golfers who were due to tee off were so impressed by the support for the day and the general ambiance in the clubhouse afterwards, that they gave a further £50, to bring the day’s total to £1,400, a figure far above initial expectations.
This announcement was greeted by tumultuous applause from the seniors. It is hoped this could become an annual event.
On the course, overall winner with 42 points was Terry Adsett, who has made his mark since joining the seniors, while Dave Lucking claimed two nearest-the-pin prizes. Pat Harrison was nearest the pin on the third but also produced the shot of the day to eagle the par-four 16th with his second shot.
