Convenience store planned for showroom

A FOOD store could open on the site of a Bognor Regis car showroom.

A retailer wants to set up shop on the ground floor of the Nyetimber Motor Vehicle sales and servicing centre on Chichester Road.

A planning application to change the use of the site from the present business to a food retail convenience store has been submitted to Arun District Council.

The company, B5 Ltd, is the applicant and its planning agent, Philip Hamblin, says in a statement: “The applicant sees an opportunity for a convenience store retail outlet with the usual ancillary services associated with this type of local convenience store.

“The proposed change of use provides a convenience store which is a great benefit to a residential community and local employment centres as it is enabling locals to obtain daily provisions without the necessity of travelling in a private motor vehicle, along with providing employment and a sense of local community.

“It also ensures that the existing building in this prominent location is maintained in use and brought into a new and more sustainable use.

“The site is ideally located within the established residential catchment area of South Bersted and close to the Bognor Regis War Memorial Hospital in Shripney Road opposite and also within easy reach of the University of Chichester Bognor Regis campus.”

The application states the proposed store’s opening hours would be from 7am-11pm daily.

Customer parking for the planned store is to be confined to the site’s existing car park accessed from Hillsboro Road. It can accommodate 18 vehicles.

Surrounding roads have double yellow lines, which should be enough to stop customers from parking on Chichester Road or at junctions with Town Cross Avenue and Hillsboro Road, he added.
