The Coastguard helicopter was deployed this afternoon (Wednesday December 30) after someone saw what they thought was a vessel being thrashed about in the stormy sea near Bognor Pier.

The vessel turned out to be a lobster pot.

A Coastguard spokeswoman said: “Dover Coastguard received a 999 call from a concerned member of the public who thought he saw an object - a vessel - being thrashed about by the waves.”

Littlehampton lifeboat and the helicopter were deployed and a second person reported seeing an object in the sea.

The helicopter made a sweep of the area to ensure nobody was in danger and guided the lifeboat back to shore in the rough sea conditions.
