Children’s safety now ‘adequate’

‘YOUR children are safe’ was the message from Peter Evans, cabinet member for children and families, as West Sussex County Council released its Ofsted results on Friday.

The council has achieved an ‘adequate’ rating for safeguarding the county’s children, after an unannounced inspection in February. The result follows a ‘disappointing’ previous inspection, which found the council to be an ‘inadequate’ service provider.

“We recognise there is still a long way to go, and we will not be resting on our laurels” said Cllr Evans.

“I want to assure residents our work to improve the standards of our services continues and we will be aiming for a higher ranking next time we are inspected.”

The council, which is still under an improvement notice from central government, held regular meetings and increased staff numbers to solve the issues highlighted by Ofsted.

Louise Goldsmith, leader of West Sussex County Council, said: “It is a good result, but one we can’t be too complacent with. We have a duty to these children.”
