NEW air conditioning is being installed to stop users of a refurbished fitness suite at the Felpham leisure centre working up too much of a sweat.

The system, along with new air handling units, will provide the perfect conditions at the Arun Leisure Centre for a workout.

They form part of a £900,000-plus refurbishment taking place to improve facilities at the centre.

Arun District Council, working with its partners, leisure operator Inspire Leisure and West Sussex County Council, is overseeing the work which began on Monday.

Cllr Paul Dendle, Arun’s cabinet member for leisure and amenities, said: “I’m really looking forward to seeing the renovations completed.

“It’s an exciting time for the development of the Arun Leisure Centre with over £1.2m worth of investments taking place over the past year.

“At the beginning of the year, the centre saw the completion and opening of the 3G artificial pitch at a cost of £360,000 with Sport England contributing £150,000 towards the project.”

The first phase of the renovation will see the refurbishment and expansion of the centre’s first-floor fitness suite.

The current gym area will be knocked through to an adjacent room to double the size of the facility.

Modern TechnoGym fitness equipment will be installed at a cost of £150,000 and will increase the number of fitness stations available.

The increased space will also allow for an Omnia unit – a functional multi-purpose training unit – to be installed.

Both changing rooms will benefit from being refreshed and updated.

The second phase of the work will see the expansion of the studio on the first floor into the adjoining squash court to create a larger multi-purpose studio space.

The bottom half of the converted squash court will be turned into a self-contained dedicated cycling studio. The existing soft play area will be retained. The work is expected to be completed next March.

As well as the gym, the leisure centre has facilities for basketball, swimming, gymnastics, tennis, table tennis and volleyball.

It also helps to provide the PE provision for Felpham Community College.
