BACKERS of Bognor Regis Pier have staged their first event this year to gather support for their campaign.

The Friends group signed up new members to take its total to 721 to move nearer the target of 1,000.

The five supporters explained the aims of Bognor Pier Trust in taking over the Grade II-listed structure and restoring it to its former glory.

A lottery bid of up to £5m is being prepared by the trust to help it achieve its goal.

Friends’ chairman Jan Malpas was among those in the London Road precinct last Saturday.

She said: “We signed up some new members to get us going for 2016
until we were rained off. There was an awful lot of interest in what we are doing.

“It was good to see as well that a lot of young people wanted to know more. They are the ones who are really going to benefit from our ambitions as we move forward.

“We want the work we plan to do for the pier to be around for years to come.”

As reported, the trust has received some backing from the Heritage Lottery Fund to enable the detailed preparations for a bid to be carried out by experts.

It is intended to submit the bid later this year.
