Arty works are on show

AN ARTIST who put the pub into public art has her work on display in Bognor Regis.

Doroto Lawrie has nine pieces on show at the exhibition in the Jeneses Arts Centre. It is open from 10.30am-3pm on Wednesdays and 11am-4pm on Saturdays until July 30.

Doroto, a 40-year-old mother of three, said: “The show is a good opportunity to exhibit my work.

“I used to run a pub before I started to study for a fine art and humanities degree at the University of Chichester.

“I like putting my work in places where people wouldn’t necessarily expect to see an exhibition.

“Jeneses is an amazing venue. It just offers so much. There is a very positive vibe about the place.

“I love abstract painting. You can just trash reality with your own ideas.

“The church is a lovely building which gives off very positive vibes. Michael Johnson is amazing and gives off so much strength to help us.”

The exhibition in the former church on Linden Road has 25 artworks and is the second to be held since the centre opened.

The initial show resulted in three paintings being sold.

The latest exhibition is being curated by Michael Johnson, the pastor of Big Love church, which meets there. Its paintings are in a range of sizes and have been created in a mix of media and feature a range of styles.

“If people have not been here before, this is an opportunity for them to come and see the building and enjoy looking at some good artwork as well,” he said.

“There are slightly fewer pieces of art than there were last year but the quality has been raised this year.

“All the artists come from in or just outside Bognor. We are in a central position and the centre is doing its best to help the community. We are all about the community.”

Big Love is one of several churches which meet at the centre which was bought by Barry and Jenny Jones two years ago.

The building was last used as a United Reformed church in July 2010.

The couple have established a regular timetable of a growing number of groups which use it as their base in the building’s range of rooms.

They are putting into effect a range of improvements to the facilities.
