An upgrade of the gas network along South Street will see around 14 weeks of disruption to the centre of Chichester.
There will be four phases of road closures when SGN begins replacing its old pipes in the new year.
The work will begin close to the Market Cross on January 18 and work its way south towards the junction of Old Market Avenue.
SGN says the work is essential and the start date was chosen to limit disruption, but it is still set to inconvenience many along what is one of the city’s busiest shopping streets.
SGN says it will compensate businesses for any ‘genuine loss of trade’.
A statement for SGN said: “This essential work involves the replacement of old metal gas mains with new plastic pipe to ensure we continue to provide a safe and reliable gas supply to the local area.
“In an effort to determine the most appropriate time for our work to be completed we have been in regular discussions with West Sussex County Council and Chichester BID, and we have agreed to begin our work on January 18.
“We anticipate the project will take approximately 14 weeks.
“The project will be split into four road closure phases, initially from the junction of East Street, working south towards the junction of Old Market Avenue.
“The traffic management has been phased to minimise disruption to road users and local businesses.
“So that we can explain more about our work, we have organised for an information stall at the annual Chichester Christmas Market on Friday December 11.
“Members of the project team will be on hand between 9am and 6pm to answer questions and talk through our plans in more detail.”
“We will try to minimise the impact of our work as much as possible but should we inadvertently affect any local businesses we do have a compensation scheme in place for genuine loss of trade.”
Those with specific enquiries can call 07775 820705 between 9am and 4pm Monday to Friday or contact the customer service team anytime on 0800 912 1700.
