All dressed up for Clap For Carers in honour of West Marden’s Donna – in pictures

Well-wishers have been dressing up to mark Clap for Carers every Thursday, in a trend launched by a West Marden pub landlord whose wife, Donna, has spent more than 50 days in intensive care with coronavirus.

Toby Morgan, who runs the Victoria Inn, said people from Chichester to Hastings and even South Africa had got involved, adding: “I’ve been bowled over by the lengths they’ve gone to.” Themes so far have included James Bond and Grease – see our gallery of photos showing people who took part below. Explaining why he started the fancy-dress tradition, Toby said: “It’s a way of making clap for carers a bit of an event and something to look forward to. It’s a bit of a laugh and it shows people are staying at home and making the best out of the situation. The whole idea was to inject a bit of humour into it, while maintaining the serious message. And from a personal perspective, remembering Donna.” Donna, 52, has now spent more than 50 days in intensive care at St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester after contracting coronavirus – read more here. After raising funds to support staff at the hospital, Toby is now on a mission to raise £200,000 to develop a holistic service to support coronavirus patients and their families – and has already raised more than £75,000.
