Worthing home owners fight flats

MIND that gap. That's the plea from residents fighting to prevent a block of flats being built in their West Worthing road.
They are opposing the demolition of 19 Ripley Road and its replacement by six flats.

While the area is predominantly Edwardian in character, this particular property was built in the 1920s, and the gap provided by its large garden constitutes an "attractive green plot", say opponents of the plan.

Objections being made to Worthing Council's planning department include a 400-name petition, submitted when a previous, similar proposal went before the development control committee, which subsequently rejected the scheme.

The residents' spokesman, 36-year-old environmental consultant James Hanson, said: "The original application was for seven flats and it was turned down on the grounds of over-intensity of development, shape and size.

"With this new application, they have made an effort to match other properties in the road, but there are still the same number of bedrooms."

The application is expected to be considered on May 29.

What do you think?

How important are new flats in this area?

What can be done to preserve the character of older parts of Worthing?
