IT'S the end of the road for the 40mph speed limit on the A24 alongside Broadwater Green.
West Sussex County Council plans to reduce the limit to 30mph on both sections of the Broadwater Street West dual-carriageway, running from Charmandean Road up to the A27 Grove Lodge roundabout.
The council said the speed limit reduction would match those of surrounding roads and it should also provide a safer environment for highway users travelling to and from Broadwater Green.
In the last three years, this stretch of road has seen 11 injury crashes, comprising nine slight and two serious incidents.
The 30mph limit would meet the national standard for a built-up area.
It should also reduce the number and severity of any future accidents, particularly at the junction with Charmandean Road.
It is expected the work will cost about £4,000, including £600 for advertising.
The A24 south of Charmandean Road, and on into the town centre, is already subject to the national 30mph speed limit for a built-up area.
The council said the 10mph reduction would give motorists a consistent message when travelling on it between the A27 and the coast, especially as the vast majority of this stretch of road is also a divided dual-carriageway.
Worthing Local Committee of county councillors will be asked at its meeting, on November 19, to advertise the lower speed limit.
