EVENT: An Audience with Elizabeth I: Come and meet Her Majesty at her political zenith! This glittering presentation will transport the audience back to the time of Drake, Raleigh and Shakespeare on England’s voyage into the Renaissance. It is enacted by Lesley Smith, Curator of Tutbury Castle and Elizabethan historian. The performance takes place at 7pm, Vicars’ Hall. Tickets £12.50. HALF TERM: October half term at WWT Arundel Wetland Centre includes the YUK Factor show, pond dipping for mini-beasts and crazy craft sessions. Special spooky events this half term include Wetland Witch’s Potions Class Oct 29 and 30 where children discover dark secrets of wetland plants and learn to write spells with quill feather pens. At dusk on the weekdays discover the bats of Arundel with a ride on the Vampire Boats. ACTIVITIES: From Monday 24 - Friday 28 October, children can get stuck in to a wide range of activities around Weald and Downland Museum’s beautiful 40-acre downland site. Activities will vary daily, but plan to include: pumpkin carving, apple bobbing, play a game of conkers, make a scary mask, hear a spine-tingling story seated around the fire, create a dancing skeleton paper puppet, plus many more activities to make and take home. Some activities have a small charge or the Museum requests a donation. Don’t worry – wet weather will not spoil play as there are plenty of areas under cover. The Museum’s historic buildings are fascinating places to explore – learn how food was prepared without modern technology in the Tudor kitchen, visit the watermill and see the Victorian smithy. There are also Shire horses, plus traditional breed farm animals, including Sussex oxen, Southdown sheep, pigs, Sussex Light chickens, and Embden geese. Activities run from 11am - 3pm daily and children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Please wear clothes and shoes that are suitable for playing outdoors. The Museum’s café kiosk will be open, plus there are indoor and outdoor picnic areas. Regular Museum admission prices apply (free for Annual Members of the Museum). TALK: Arun & Chichester (Air) Enthusiasts Society - Air ACES - welcome Commander Michael Maddox OBE RN for a talk on ‘Flying in the Fleet Air Arm during the Cold War’. 7pm for 7.30pm start at the Chichester Park Hotel, Chichester, PO19 7QL. Mike Maddox has the unique distinction of having served in frontline Naval Air Squadrons, equipped with the Sea Vixen, the Buccaneer, the Phantom and ASW Sea King helicopters, during a 37 year career. His final appointment was as a Commanding Officer of the unit that controlled the RAF electronic Warfare Squadron, and of which was equipped with Canberra aircraft. At this talk, Mike will describe the diverse operations undertaken by Naval Aviators during the Cold War period. A most interesting talk session is assured by this amazing speaker – Commander Michael Maddox OBE RN. This presentation will be amazing – with plenty of pictures – a talk for everyone, not just those interested in aviation. Entrance for members is £3, guests £5 and under 16s free.
